Simple Site setup
I think most of you know I have another site called Dogsbreath.org - I use Folderblog 2 to run the thing, and I'm finding it to be a pain in the ass. I'm not sure upgrading to Folderblog 3 is the answer - since I think the author is a student and more involved with studies than optimizing code and supporting the product (fine by me - he should be studying - much more important than photoblogging software). Still -- that leaves me with trying to figure out what's best for Dogsbreath. Someone mentioned Pixelpost -- but I've heard that's really buggy - and users are experiencing some serious commenting issues... I'd go with Expressions - but I have my own hosting service and domain -- I don't think that's for me. I could install MT - and give that a whirl - but I'd have to hire yet another programmer -- and for dogsbreath - I'm not sure I'd want to pay all that much. Does anyone have any thoughts as to something simple and easy to set up? My main issue right now is spam - I'm getting killed. I get a TON on No Traces - but I have a pretty robust spam blocker in place to keep things under control -- not so with Dogsbreath. Also, Folderblog feels flakey - and it is. I went to post a new photo today, and had issues with it not showing up as the most recent post. I had to basically delete my last two entries - and then repost. It's working fine now - but I get this strange feeling the whole thing could come crashing down... I love the site - and I have tons of great photos in the queue - I just need to make a transition before posting up another dozen images and the place comes crashing down. I'm open to all ideas! Thanks... Bob | 04:24 PM |

You may want to try Pictoralis, it's photo blogging software based on Wordpress. I haven't tried it personally but it looks to be pretty nice. comment by Jauder Ho at 04:24 PM on 02.11.06
[ link ] I switched from MT to Pixelpost and have found it to be excellent thus far. I have had zero problems with spam, something I could not say with MT where trackback spam was killing me, but I don't think I get quite the same amount of traffic you do. I see you own a Powerbook and thus run mac OS. Maybe iWeb would be something to look at. It's really simplistic, but kinda depends on your needs if it fits.. Hey man, try b2evolution! I use it for mccorkleness.com/live has a full backend, really easy to install (i could do it for you), and you just upload your jpg/gif and it's inserted into the blog field, plus whatever you'd like. cross-posting, everything. really really really easy. really powerful. xhtml compliant comment by Chris McCorkle at 04:24 PM on 02.11.06
[ link ] I've used WP (pictoralis) and its not bad. A little overkill for just a photoblog. last year I used PixelPost... and if you want to have JUST a photoblog, its the easiest to setup and use. Spam was an issue... I changed some of the backend on the comment form and it got rid of some of most of the comment spam. And there are additional plugins that I didnt try. I just moved over to TextPattern.. I wanted to have a little more out of my blog... text only posts, and pic only posts. I'm liking it. I had to really build my own as they dont have anything out of box... but thats the nice thing about TXP... its very flexible. If you hit the forums and see some of the sites that ppl are using TXP... its amazing. Its not a blogging tool, its a CMS. Lots of "static" type of sites being designed around it. I use Folderblog 2, have done for a year and a bit. its uncomplicated and basic but you dont need to faf on with databases and all that shite. It does what I need and i've found it to be incredibly stable because its so simple. The one thing I'd say is name all your images numerically. so 001.jpg 002.jpg, it makes it a hell of a lot easier to reorganize if your server gets wiped or something Pixelpost would be easy for a simple photo blog, but not futureproof. comment by Andy photo lover at 04:24 PM on 02.11.06
[ link ] Pixelpost was recently updated (version 1.5) to address some security issues. It might be worth surfing through the forums to check out what was "fixed." Leave a Comment
