I'm trying to find a daycare / in-home care provider - so I can give myself a break - just twice a week. I realize she needs something more than just dad strolling her around town. She loves playing with other kids her age - she learns more - and I know she enjoys herself a little more than hanging out with me at the coffee shop.

So - I could use the time away, too. I'm all rusty and dull right now - and having two days of freedom a week would do me a world of good. I know I'll worry - I know I'll probably want to go pick her up early - I'll obsess over whether it's the right thing to do - or not... but - it's time - and - it's only for 10-12 hours a week... I won't miss her that much, right?

She knows the power of sugar (kisses for those of you not in the know :-) ). She sings. She dances. She can count to 10 - backwards. She has friends. She loves just one dog. She can say applesauce! (I don't think I could say that until I was like 12)... She'll tell me when she's ready for a nap. She'll sleep in late. She loves her "slipper shoes" (see photo). She knows her way around the neighborhood. She likes to wrestle with the boys. She knows biting is a no-no.

I learn something from her every single day. I can't wait to see her in the morning. I love washing her hair. I love how she lightly pinches my arm while we read a book or watch TV together.

I think I mentioned I'm back in the darkroom - finally. I love every minute I spend there. While I'm there I lose all track of time. I'm calm. I'm at peace. I'd say it's very much like the time I spend sitting in meditation - except I come away with pretty pictures other people can see.

It's the New Year. I've made some resolutions - the biggest one is to shoot with the cameras I shoot with the most - and sell off the others. I've actually sold A LOT of my camera gear - and I'm happy I did. The one great thing darkroom time does for me is allows me to evaluate my negatives from the last few years, and determine which cameras / film / focal lengths I shoot with the most.

What I found came to me as no surprise. I mostly shoot with the same cameras I've shot with for years - mostly my rangefinders - and a fair amount with my 35mm SLR and MF cameras. I shoot a little with my pinholes and view cameras - and I intend to do more with them this year. I mostly shoot b&w - and 80% of the time I'm shooting with a 50mm or 35mm lens. No surprise at all.

With that in mind, the other part of the resolution is to use what I have - no other acquisitions. Trust me, I have enough to keep me busy until I draw my last breath. I certainly have enough film in cold storage to last me until Mae enters first grade!

So - I suppose I can say that what I've been looking for over the last many years was always right there in my own backyard. It was fun looking elsewhere, but I have to admit the distractions probably impeded my progress a bit.

It's a New Year. I'm a stay-at-home dad and loving it (yes, it has it's major challenges -- but I'm not one to turn away from a good challenge)... I look forward to this year - I realize just how fast time flies - and how quickly our little ones grow up. My eldest baby will be 28 this year -- 28... Damn -- where does the time go??

Happy New Year!

I love this photograph of Alison. She was about six months along with Mae and she looked so beautiful. I think this was about the time I sold my house and moved to Toronto. So long ago - so it seems. It's a reminder to to me to enjoy each day - they go by oh so fast...

I love her more than a cool sea breeze and a Havana-made Mojito (yes, it's a capital M - how could it not be? We're talking Mojito's here)...

Today marks one year -- ONE YEAR -- I've been managing this crazy baby on my own during the week. In case you missed it - I'm a stay-at-home dad. I left corporate life almost 3 years ago - and I decided to take on the job of raising Mae. It's been - well - interesting - humbling - tiring - exhausting - eye opening - rewarding - exhilarating - and much more... Nearly 30 years in the high-tech / graphic arts world was a walk in the park compared to this job.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hey! It's Wednesday in some parts of the world -- which means we're almost halfway home to the weekend. Oh - and a full moon blooms very early tomorrow morning where I live... I keep thinking I'll go back out under some nice lunar light -- but -- 5:40 A.M. workout, followed by a day with crazy Mae is enough for me... The moon will still be there when I'm ready...

I had an awesome Thanksgiving. We had a traditional American Thanksgiving. We sat around and bickered and fought the whole time! --- No -- just kidding... The turkey was great - mashed 'taters - even pumpkin pie this year WITH whipped cream. Very relaxing day... I probably had a little more wine than I should have -- but hey - it's the holidays!

Back to work for all of us. I'm signing Mae up for dance classes, and maybe swimming - if I can get her in. I don't know how to swim, so it'll be good for me to take her. She's a lot easier to handle these days - but man is she intense. So - I realize I need to have more planned things to keep her busy - and me, too.

I've been back in the darkroom - I've been catching up on developing film / scanning / printing. I'll probably never really catch up, but at least I'm making some progress.

So -- enjoy the week. The holiday season is upon us. Maybe Santa will bring us all big fat checks like the Wall Street pukes will be getting...
