Moonlight Heronry

I went out for a short while tonight. I really went out to scout around in the heronry. This isn't a great shot, but I wasn't out long because rain is moving in. For those of you who don't know what a heronry is, it's a place where herons breed and nest. This particular heronry has been here for probably more than a few hundred years - maybe longer. What's really great about this heronry is that only Great Blue Herons nest here.

The Great Blue is my SPARK BIRD. A spark bird is a bird that starts it all for a birder - or bird watcher - like me. I saw a Great Blue Heron when I was like 6 months old - from that time on - it's been a love affair between me and birds. I'm crazy about them. I've seen more than I care to admit, and I've traveled far and wide to find them. Any bird will do - but the Great Blue is the bird which owns my heart.

So - here you see seven nests under the light of the moon. If I'm really lucky, in about two months I'll take another shot, and you may just see little heads peeking out...
